The MBone is a virtual multicast network overlaying the existing Internet. It "tunne
ls" through that infrastructure by making multicast packets appear unicast to conventional routers. The packet's header contains the unicast address of the receiving conventional router and code identifying the packet contents as IP addresses. Once through the receiving router, the head is stripped off and the multicast packets are sent to their intended destinations.
