The phone is linked via an external adapter that connects to the PC's se
rial or parallel port (and soon via a USB [universal serial bus]). The PC is not directly connection to the phone line, but rather to the adapter.
ADVANTAGES:
Such systems are easy to implement and don't necessitate extensive changes to an existing telephone system.
DISADVANTAGES:
Today's adapters don't provide a connection to the phone line and cannot be used to connect data or fax lines to the PC. This will change with USB.
