It is important to weigh the level of protection you
need against the performance you'll see during reads and writes. Utimaco tested the speed of various encryption algorithms. The very simple XOR algorithm, which is the fastest, is the reference value. DES is much more complex and secure but is about 33 times slower than XOR at read and write operations.
