ArticlesMicrosoft Network

February 1996 / International Features / An On-Line Battle for Turf / Microsoft Network

MSN was launched in Europe with Windows 95 in August 1995. The MSN client software is part of the localized Windows 95 version. Microsoft says it will target home users first. By the end of this year, it will set up professional services. MSN offers localized content in the U.K., Germany, and France, and access points in several European countries. Internet access, with no additional charge, will be provided during the first half of this year.

Charges: DM 14 per month for 2 hours of access and DM 7.70 for each additional hour in Germany, France, and the U.K. (billing in local currencies).

Access: 63 nodes across Europe (U.K. 47, France 14, and Germany 12), with 14.4 Kbps in most major cities, but there are also 9.6-Kbps nodes.

MSN plans to cover up to 80 percent of the population of France, Germany, and the U.K. this year.
