"DNA by the Numbers"
(December 1995, page 110) you mention "four common genes (D2SS44, D157, D1580 and D17S79)." These are not genes, but DNA segments--the difference being that these are known markers with unknown function, as opposed to genes, which have known functions. Furthermore, the DNA segments that are listed (except for D17S79) do not exist. I believe the list should be D2S44, D1S7, and D1S80. D17S79 agrees with the picture in the text box.
