For a time before the product's release, Microsoft was positioning Exchange Server as a possible direct competitor to Lotus Notes, the top-selling groupware program. The version of Exchange that Microsoft finally sh ipped turned out to be more of a beefed-up e-mail program than an entire groupware platform like Notes.
