ArticlesDual's LCD-PC

June 1996 / International Bits / Dual's LCD-PC
Mark LaPedus

Known for its high-end notebook PCs, Dual Technology (Taipei, Taiwan, +886-2-788-3919; fax +886-2-783-0023) is moving into the desktop PC market with the introduction of its LCD-PC . This is a Pentium-level multimedia computer that incorporates a unique case design with a 12.1-inch active-matrix display instead of the conventional CRT monitor.

With the prices of high-resolution TFT-LCDs rapidly dropping, the LCD-PC could be an affordable solution for some home PC buyers. However, the LCD-PC will be $300 to $400 higher than a stand ard desktop PC with a CRT-based color monitor, says Steve Gau, regional sales manager for Dual.

The LCD-PC runs Intel's 100-, 120-, or 133-MHz Pentium processors. The LCD-PC sports a unique package design that combin es the best elements of a desktop and a notebook. The LCD, which has a resolution of 800 by 600 pixels, is attached to the system's case. A hinge on the case allows the LCD to swivel up and down, making it ideal for viewing from various angles. However, the LCD does not move side to side.

The LCD-PC also has several multimedia features, including a six-speed CD-ROM drive, a 16-bit sound card, an MPEG-1 card, and a TV tuner. It comes with a 31Ú2-inch 1-GB hard disk and eight slots (ISA, EISA, and PCI).

Initially, the LCD-PC will be sold as an "all-in-one" package. Later versions will be modular, thereby allowing distributors and end users to upgrade and replace the motherboard, LCD, hard drive, CD-ROM drive, and other peripherals.
