/ Save Energy: Shut Down Your LAN
Companies can reduce the power consumption of their LANs by more than 50 percent. How? By using state-of-the-art energy-optimized devices and shutting down their networks over night. That's the result of a survey published recently by the Swiss Federal Office of Energy. The study, entitled "Efficient Energy Management in Computer
and Communications Networks," also says that computer and communications equipment eats up about 1.6 percent (772 GWh) of the total energy consumed in Switzerland.
Reacting to the study, Getatron (Amriswil, Switzerland) developed an energy manager for small and midsize LANs. The device, expected to ship later this year, can be programmed to shut down the LAN, and all components, after regular working hours. Before shutdown, the
system warns late workers, who can keep the LAN powered up by just pressing a button on the energy manager.

is
theoretical--and no language better exemplifies this than C++.
