ArticlesEthernet Switch for Big LANs

August 1996 / International What's New / Ethernet Switch for Big LANs

The LANbooster is a modular Ethernet switch that includes as many as 48 ports and can be used as a central switching hub in building-wide and campus networks. The device utilizes the MetaSwitching architecture, which permits collision-free full-duplex operation at all ports at maximum Ethernet speed, according to Siemens Network Systems. To deliver high throughput even at full load, it incorporates an ASIC chip that splits the incoming Ethernet frames into 8-byte cells and then reconstitutes them when they leave the switch. The internal high-speed bus with a throughput of up to 800 Mbps achieves a constant delay time of 40 microseconds.
