BYTE awards recognize the most important and innovative products at Asia's largest computer show.

The AcerNote Nuovo received BYTE's Best of Show award at Computex Taipei '96. The winners and finalists in other categories are:

Best Portable

The AcerNote Nuovo , from Acer. This feature-rich notebook includes an advanced power management system that learns how the notebook is being used and adjusts different energy-saving parameters accordingly. Word processor and spreadsheet users can expect more than 7 hours of use on a sin gle battery charge.

Finalists

InfoRay PD-96 , a Chinese handwriting-recognition PDA from Palmax Technology .

FT-6600, from Ability Enterprise (Canon) , a stylish and highly configurable notebook that will offer one of the first optional magneto-optical (MO) drives.


Best Desktop System

The Umax Pulsar 1500 , from Umax Data Systems, is a Mac clone that supports multiprocessing with two fast PowerPC microprocessors. With six PCI slots, room for 1 GB of RAM, and a street price that undercuts the equivalent Mac by at least 15 percent, this Mac clone should breathe new life into the future of Mac computing.

Finalists

Acer's Altos 19000 , a big brute of a server that can incorporate fast RAID arrays and a built-in uninterruptible power supply.

L eo Titan 100-P200+, from First International Computer , is one of the first Intel-compatible PCs based on the Cyrix P200+.


Best Motherboard

Asustek's P/I-XPUP5 , a flexible motherboard design that places the CPU and support chips on a separate daughtercard. Current CPU cards include dual Pentiums and dual Pentium Pros, while the main board supports up to 1 GB of RAM in eight SIMM slots.

Finalists

The P/I-XP6NP5, also from Asustek , a Pentium Pro ATX motherboard with the Natoma chip set.

The P6FX2-A, from Elitegroup , a dual-processor Pentium Pro ATX motherboard.


Best Multimedia

Optics Storage's Maverick 12X. The 12XCD-ROM drive supports a transfer rate of 1800 KBps and 150-millise cond access times.

Finalists

Ulead Systems' PhotoImpact 3.01 with WebExtensions makes image editing for the Web easier than ever.

The CD685C CD-Changer, from Acer Peripherals , combines a four-CD changer with an eight-speed reader.


Best Communications

Trend Micro Devices' LANDesk Virus Protect 2.0 provides easily managed network antivirus protection for Windows NT.

Finalists

The TA717 ISDN Adapter, from E-Tech. This is a Basic Rate Interface (BRI) ISDN terminal adapter for various international ISDN standards.

Acer Netxus's AcerISDN T30 , a reasonably priced, pleasingly designed BRI ISDN terminal adapter.


Best Display Device

The AT1 730, from Ability Enterprise , is a 17-inch monitor with an absolutely gorgeous display and an extensive array of on-screen adjustments.

Finalists

The DJ Series, from MAG Technology , a family of high-resolution monitors with an intuitive setting adjustment.

The PT Series, from ViewSonic , a high-resolution, plug-and-play line of large monitors.


Best Input Device

The Primax PhotoDrive will bring photo scanning to home and small-office markets. It conveniently fits into a standard half-height drive bay in a PC.

Finalists

Umax Data Systems' PageManager 1.21 makes scanning available to any application, with any scanner.

Plustek's OpticPro 4800P is a reasonably priced parallel-port flatbed color scanner.

Spot Technologie s' ScanTak-2C is an inexpensive flatbed color scanner with a host of useful software applications.


Best Connectivity

The D-Link DE-660CT PC Card Ethernet adapter uses an AI application to manage ervice interrupts, substantially increasing Ethernet throughput without increasing CPU use.

Finalists

D-Link's DFE-1612TX/1212 TX/1208TX family of Fast Ethernet hubs.

Tekram Technology's CS-700 CD-ROM Server combines Novell Embedded Systems Technology (NEST) with IDE drives to deliver an inexpensive CD-ROM server solution.
