ArticlesVANs vs. the Internet

September 1996 / International Features / Internet + VANs = A Serious EDI Platform / VANs vs. the Internet

PRO-VAN

Reliability: Consistent delivery throughout the network.

Performance: Guaranteed delivery time of messages.

Security: Traffic can't be tampered with.

Authentication: The sender and receiver of a message can be

identified unambiguously.

Nonrepudiation: A receipt function reveals that messages

were accepted by the intended trading

partner.

PRO-INTERNET

Costs:
ISPs charge a low flat rate (between $20 and
$500 per month), whereas VAN carriers charge
                 high usage fees.

Global reach:
The Internet's ubiquitous access widens the
                 potential pool of trading partners.

Access to the customer:
With home users surfing the Web, companies
                 have direct access to them.
