ArticlesModem Sharing for Outbound Communications

September 1996 / International What's New / Modem Sharing for Outbound Communications
Rainer Mauth

SAPS, SpartaCom's Asynchronous Port Sharing software, lets LAN users effectively share a pool of modems for inbound and outbound calls. SAPS allows peer-to-peer sharing of COM ports between Windows and NT workstations on a LAN. With SAPS, network administrators can assign external modems or ISDN adapters to a group of users, eliminating the need for a dedicated line and modem for every user. The program searches for the first available modem in the assigned modem pool and automatically opens or closes a port when an application calls it. It manages access rights by passwords and displays port-status and connection errors. Although designed for NT, SAPS also works on other NetBIOS-compatible systems and su pports Microsoft LAN Manager and IBM LAN Server COM-port sharing on OS/2. With SAPS, you can reduce your investment in modems and phone lines.
