ArticlesDisk Encryption

September 1996 / International What's New / Disk Encryption

To ensure greater software security, DisKey, from Veritas Technology Solutions, encrypts and compresses files, directories, or a combination of files. DisKey secures files by locking them when you drag the file icon onto the DisKey icon or directly from the context menu. After a file has been encrypted, a small red x is added to its icon. DisKey offers two different methods for locking a file: DisKey locking and password locking. With DisKey locking, every time that a file is locked, DisKey randomly generates a key and th en stores it in the DisKey database on a floppy disk. No passwords are needed. For the file to be unlocked, the key disk must be in the disk drive. With password locking, you must enter the password upon locking a file; the password is also needed to unlock the file.
