ArticlesDemand Soars for Big Screens

October 1996 / International Bits / Demand Soars for Big Screens

Asian firms predict a huge demand for wall-mounted plasma displays.

The demand for large-screen color plasma display panels (PDPs) is now heating up in Asia. Japan's Fujitsu , NEC, Sharp, and others are introducing large-s creen PDPs, while Korea's Samsung is reportedly making large investments in the arena.

NEC is building a new PDP factory in Kagoshima, with production slated to begin in April 1998. Production quantities are expected to reach 30,000 units per month, NEC says. The company has already completed the development of 33- and 42-inch PDPs and has plans to ship these products in August and December, respectively.

PDPs are one of the key display types for next-generatio n multimedia applications, such as wall-mounted TV screens. PDP technology has been around for a while, but recent advances in the technology have made the products more cost-effective to produce, NEC officials say. The company estimates that the PDP market will grow from 3 million units, or $2.4 billion, in the year 2000 to 11 million units, or about $7 billion, by 2002.
