ArticlesATM Upgrade for LANs

October 1996 / International What's New / ATM Upgrade for LANs

Fibronics' XM501 ATM Access Card is a simple way to upgrade your current LAN to asynchronous transfer mode via the Fibronics GigaHub. The XM501 connects the GigaHub backplane to ATM networks, forming large backbone systems. It features a bridge/switch engine that provides a backplane-to-ATM gateway using a 155-Mbps OC3 connection. The XM501 preserves all network investments and, Fibronics says, ensures interoperability between switched Ethernet and Fast Ethernet stations over an ATM backbone. The Access Card features LAN Emulation Server service, allowing it to operate in ATM networks with an ATM switch that does not provide such service. The XM501 supports permanent virtual circuits, switched virtual circuits, and UNI V3.1 signaling.
