ArticlesCD-ROM Review: Use Multimedia to Learn Multimedia

October 1996 / Bits / CD-ROM Review: Use Multimedia to Learn Multimedia
Jason Krause

With today's new point-and-click authoring tools, anyone can toss together a multimedia project. But mastering the text, audio, video, hyperlinks, and varied production skills often required in creating a CD-ROM, Web page, or business presentation is another matter. The Sonic CD-ROM for Desktop Audio Production focuses on one special aspect of multimedia: sound.

The disc offers a thorough lesson in audio production basics, and it makes good use of plentiful examples. This product wil l be most useful for technicians who want to polish their sound skills.

Another valuable CD-ROM for audio production is the IEEE's Standards in Computer Generated Music. This CD offe rs essays and documents concerning desktop music publishing, MIDI, high-level music programming, digital audio, 3-D sound, multimedia, and computer-assisted instruction.

The amount of information varies from subject to subject. The CD may disappoint people interested in a specific angle (e.g., only one study covers 3-D sound). Overall, however, this disc delivers practical information for audio developers on a wide variety of topics.
