ArticlesBug of the Month

May 1997 / Bits / Bug of the Month

Outside Looking In

Another bug involving security and the Internet recently made the news, but Microsoft acted quickly and says that it has already posted a fix for the problem. The bug affected users running Internet Explorer 2.0, 3.0, or 3.01 running Windows 95 or NT. Anyone who knew how to exploit this particular hole could design a Web site that would use Windows shortcuts to access programs and files on a client PC.

Microsoft says that it doesn't know of any users that were actually affected by the flaw, but the company is strongly recommending its users to upgrade, either by downloading the fix from the company's Web site ( http://www.microsoft.com ) or by telephoning 800-322-9997. At press time, Microsoft was working on fixes for users running NT on Alpha, PowerPC, and Mips platforms.
