The DX2, Intel's 486 chip that ran at twice the MHz speed internally as it did externally, made its debut. Meanwhile, Compaq's 50-MHz Deskpro 486 cost $12,999 as tested, although less-expensive systems were available from other vendors. Also in this issue: An explanation of 3-D past and future by Silicon Graphics founder Jim Clark, as well as other pieces on 3-D. Also, noteb ooks with active-matrix screens were starting to appear, including the T4400SXC from Toshiba, which featured an 8 1/2-inch screen. (In comparison, today 13 inches will soon be standard.)
