ArticlesCD-ROM Servers Ratings

June 1997 / BYTE Hardware Lab Report / CD-ROM Servers Ratings

Best Overall/Best PC-Based Server: Microtest Enterprise Group DiscPort Enterprise Server for Windows NT

The DiscPort Enterprise Server is the champion of the crop, equaling or outperforming the other systems consistently. Providing near-maximum throughput under all conditions, it's the best choice for high-demand environments where performance is the only concern. For less demanding applications, however, its high price makes it a poor value for the money.

Best Non-PC Server: Boffin 7 Bay Tower

Located at the opposite end of the price spectrum from the DiscPort Enterprise Server, the Boffin 7 Bay offers middle-of-the-road performance but does so consistently, regardless of demand. At a price of just $3548, the device represen ts an exceptional value for the money. Unless money is no object, this unit deserves serious consideration for a role as your primary or secondary CD-ROM server.
