ArticlesWhat to Look for in I 2 O Servers

August 1997 / Features / I 2 O Beats I/O Bottlenecks / What to Look for in I 2 O Servers

At the time of this writing, I 2 O-compliant devices are just starting to appear on the market. To ensure that a potential server can take advantage of I 2 O's capabilities, look for the following features in its design:

Flash memory for the boot ROM: I 2 O requires a revised boot sequence to detect I 2 O-compliant devices and install the drivers. If the server's cu rrent firmware doesn't support I 2 O, its flash memory lets you add this ability through an inexpensive software download. Even for an I 2 O-savvy server, you'll want this feature so that you'll be able to add I 2 O capabilities coming later, such as Fibre Channel, ATM, and clustering, which will require a change in the boot process.

ISA buses need not apply: I 2 O leverages off the capabilities of the PCI bus for device installation and performance. There's no support for the older bus architecture.
