The AutoNet ($995), from Mylex, is a platform-independent, embedded Plug and Play network server engine, otherwise known as a "thin" server. Based on the NetEngine architecture, which uses open RISC, ASIC, I/O, and LAN architectures, the AutoNet will support the addition of high-performance SCSI peripherals to a LAN architecture. The AutoNet has the form factor of a 3-1/2-inch disk drive. You can use it as a file server or to add storage pr
oducts to a network. You can use the AutoNet to perform functions that were previously performed by more expensive file servers, but without requiring NICs, large amounts of RAM, or NOS licenses, as do other file servers.
