ArticlesTuning Up for 4 GB

December 1997 / Eval / Microsoft Laces Up for the Enterprise Race / Tuning Up for 4 GB

While both the standard and Enterprise Edition versions of Windows NT Server 4.0 can address up to 4 GB of RAM, the 4GB Memory Tuning (4GT) feature of Enterprise Edition allows the server to use up to 1 GB more RAM than the standard version allows for memory-intensive processes. In the standard version, up to 2 GB of memory is made available to processes, while the other 2 GB is available to the NT kernel. 4GT a djusts the way in which the server ha ndles memory so that up to 3 GB of RAM can be used by processes, leaving the other 1 GB for the kernel. Applications must be specially modified to take advantage of 4GT.

It may be some time before most organizations will be able to take advantage of 4GT, because the server must be configured with at least 2 GB of physical RAM. However, as the price of memory continues to drop, such large amounts of RAM will likely become more common for large application servers.
