ArticlesCyberGear Integrates Telephony and IP Routing

March 1998 / International What's New / CyberGear Integrates Telephony and IP Routing
Bob Emmerson

As data and voice environments converge and client/server telephony platforms emerge, the management and configuration of LANs is becoming even more complicated. But Network Alchemy's CyberGear shows that setting up and managing telephony-enabled networks doesn't need to be complicated at all.

The device scales from six to 96 users and combines the functionality of a PBX with that of an IP router. The PBX provides full call-processing features, plus voice mail and call logging. The router includes a firewall and supports DHCP, which automates the management of IP network addressing. An installation wizard and an external control panel handle the rest of the setup procedure.

The tight integration between the PBX and the IP router enables computer telephony (CT) features, such as unification of voice mail, e-mail, and faxes into one in-box; automatic outbound dialing; and display of contact information for inbound calls. Automatic Network Address Translation lets several users access the Internet with one preconfigured or dynamically assigned IP address.

CyberGear is a stackable system that uses multiple basic-rate interfaces to match the trunk capacity and supports a full 30-line PRI configuration. In this high-end configuration, it also includes Ethernet hub functionality and WAN compression. It's also available in an entry-level product for staff working from home.

The CyberGear system comes with a separate switch, router, and hub. This means that Internet access, data routing, and CT applications are effectively free.
