ArticlesMore Flexibility in the Local Loop

April 1998 / International What's New / More Flexibility in the Local Loop
Rainer Mauth

As competition in the European telecommunications markets heats up, alternative carriers are looking for new ways to lure corporate data and voice traffic away from the established public telephone organizations. Frame relay (FR), which received fairly low acceptance during monopoly times, may be a practical solution for Europe's alternative carriers.

RAD Data Communications' Megaplex 2100H hybrid FR/TDM multiplexer offers carriers and service providers a flexible solution for data and voice services in the local loop. The product can house up to 21 I/O modules with up to 30 high-speed data channels, 60 voice channels, or 40 voice-over-FR c hannels in a single modular chassis. You can configure it for simultaneo us FR and time division multiplexing (TDM) traffic or pure TDM over E1/T1.

With the Megaplex 2100H, you can consolidate traffic to fewer E1 access lines and take advantage of more efficient packet-switched services for your LAN traffic. Because it features a modular design, you can upgrade corporate TDM networks to FR and still maintain leased-line connections where necessary.

Conventional wisdom says that FR is one of the cheapest and easiest technologies for bursty LAN traffic and internetworking. Also, private or public FR networks enable the transport of voice traffic. With the Megaplex 2100H, carriers and corporations can save the cost of separate voice and data lines.
