Riverbank Computing has updated PyQt, a set of Qt bindings for the Python programming language that supports the same platforms as Qt. PyQt v3.10 is implemented as a set of 9 extension modules containing 300 classes and over 5,750 functions and methods. PyQt also includes bindings to QScintilla, the port to Qt of the Scintilla editor component, and the pyuic utility, which generates Python code to implement user interfaces created with Qt Designer in the same way that the uic utility generates C++ code.

Version 2.1 of Argentum Backup for Windows, which works in conjunction with WinZip 9 to back up data in .zip files, features full and native support for Zip64, the new 64-bit extensions to the Zip format. The original Zip file format limited the number of member files in a Zip file to 65,535, and the maximum size of both the Zip file itself and any member item to 4 gigabytes. For all practical purposes, the 64-bit extended format eliminates all these restrictions. Argentum Backup 2.1 remains fully compatible with the original file format and uses the original Zip format whenever possible.

In this volume of Best of BYTE, we explore the emergence of some heuristic algorithms. Although we have only scratched the surface of this intriguing subject, we hope we've suggested the potential of the synthesis of heuristics and algorithms.
