Holiday Gifts for Geeks

By Jerry Pournelle

December 13, 2004

Column 293

Orchids and Onions

Nominations are now open for the annual Chaos Manor Orchid and Onion Parade. Send your nominations with a brief explanation to me at jerryp@jerrypournelle.com. Please include the word orchids or the word onions (as appropriate) in the subject line, and it would be better if you have one or more of each to send separate e-mails. My rules system will sort them into proper places, so please don't include correspondence on other matters in the nomination letters.

I'll collect all these and reflect on them. Your letters may be published. If I do publish your letter and you want to be identified, add the name you want published as a signature; otherwise it will be anonymous. Include your email address as a signature only if you want that published; otherwise that won't be given.

I've been doing the annual Orchids and Onions Parade, as well as the Chaos Manor User's Choice Awards, in the year's end BYTE column since 1980.

Some Christmas Gift Items

It's easy enough to think of gifts of electronics and I won't try to duplicate everyone else's lists, but there are a few items worth your attention.

Rayovac 15 Minute Charger System

First, the Rayovac 15 minute battery charging system. This really works, and makes taking digital photographs a snap. I keep two sets of the batteries—the 15 minute charge only works with the special Rayovac batteries—and swap at fifteen to twenty minute intervals. That way I always have fresh batteries, and the flash cycle doesn't take very long.

You can get this with an adapter cord that will plug into your car's lighter outlet, and it's worth having that. Two sets of batteries and this charger will change the way you take digital pictures.

The Best of BYTE: Volume 2 - Heuristic Algorithms
In this volume of Best of BYTE, we explore the emergence of some heuristic algorithms. Although we have only scratched the surface of this intriguing subject, we hope we've suggested the potential of the synthesis of heuristics and algorithms.
