Letters to Byte.com

I read with interest the Op/Ed by James Merritt bemoaning the slow response of his 5400 Mac, and his decision to dump his Mac and move to a Windows PC [see A Casualty of the Browser Wars, Byte.com, 6/24/2002]. I think he is a victim of developing technology rather than of the manufacturer.

Sheesh! The least you could have done was provide an active link to the Mozilla web site, as you did with that disaster of a browser Amaya. [See Not Too Late to Celebrate by Shannon Cochran, Byte.com, 6/17/2002.] One might conclude that, your endorsement notwithstanding, you think Mozilla is the proverbial loony aunt that is best kept in the closet, out of sight.

The Best of BYTE: Volume 2 - Heuristic Algorithms
In this volume of Best of BYTE, we explore the emergence of some heuristic algorithms. Although we have only scratched the surface of this intriguing subject, we hope we've suggested the potential of the synthesis of heuristics and algorithms.
