Nothing proves the resilience of the open-source phenomenon like the quantity and quality of software that continues to come out of it, undeterred by wars, recessions, and social upheaval. All the projects we know from years back are still around, and new ones join the roster every day. This also applies to the subject of this column: the Linux kernel and all its major subsystems. The main distributions are still carrying boring versions and there is very little difference between, for instance, SuSE 7.2 and SuSE 7.3 in terms of new functionality in the main subsystems.
